He chuckled. “I don’t know if I would be called a softie.”
“Certainly for the dogs. You didn’t seem that enthralled at the gala last night.”
Roman took a deep breath and shrugged. “Throwing money at things is the easy part. Getting stuck in, that can kill you.”
“You do love those dogs, don’t you?”
“All of them. I don’t even know where it comes from, you know? We never really had a dog growing up, not one I remember. I always loved them, though. To me, a horror movie sucks if a dog gets killed. In fact, any film, now that I think about it. Dogs should be the ultimate survivors.”
Abigail laughed. “You’re so sweet.”
The waitress came back and placed a chocolate milkshake in front of each of them, letting them know their food was going to be twenty minutes. Roman didn’t mind. He still held Abigail’s hand as he took a long swallow of the chocolate milkshake. He wasn’t expecting to enjoy it, but it amazed him how good that actually tasted.
Chapter Nine
Abigail had seen a lot of sides to Roman over the years she’d worked for him. She’d seen the angry boss, the stressed boss, the stern boss, even the one everyone feared. He had worn many faces, and not once had they slipped.
This weekend, seeing him with those dogs, watching that easy smile on his face and how he just seemed to connect with the dogs, had hit her on a different level.
Roman was not just any man, but one who had feeling, he cared, and the dogs actually meant something to him. Unlike the gala, he didn’t just throw money at it, enjoy some drinks, and have a dance. There was so much more to him than she even realized. And she wanted to know more.
The following few days at work, she found herself looking toward his office, and the words he spoke in his fevered daze kept coming back to her.
She trusted Roman. What did scare her a little was, she didn’t see this as a summertime fling. They were already in fall, and her feelings for Roman were not fleeting. They were deepening, and she had no idea how he felt about her. She didn’t know if this was just a game to him.
By the time Wednesday came, Abigail was none the wiser as to what Roman felt for her, but he was also having a bad day. On a particularly sticky phone call, Roman ended up slamming the phone down, and he had a frown between his brows, and it didn’t look like it was going to disappear anytime soon.
“Are you having a bad day?” she asked.
“It’s certainly not fucking sunshine or roses. Fuck!” He threw himself back into his chair. “The Mavis account, they want us to come up with another figure, otherwise they’re going to a rival.”
“They signed the contract, that is not viable.”
“I know, but they seem to think they can negotiate.” He shook his head. “Trying to argue with their asshole of a CEO that once contracts were signed and sealed, there was no turning back. He’s told me he has his lawyers working on it.”
“And seeing as your lawyers have already done their job, you need to stop stressing out.”
Roman nodded. “You’re right. I just can’t deal with assholes that ... don’t listen.”
Abigail looked at him, and she knew in that strangest of all moments, that she was in love with this man. She’d been falling in love with him for nine years, that was the reality.
Closing the door to his office, she flicked the lock into place, and then moved to his blinds and twisted them, darkening the office. There was still light coming from the main window that overlooked the city. It was an overcast and miserable day.
Roman didn’t say anything, but she took a step closer to him, then another, removing her jacket as she did so. She felt his gaze on her, and she moved between him and the desk. “You’re working too hard,” she said.
“I have to work hard. I’m a very busy man.”
“Too busy to have sex with your PA?” she asked.
“Abi, what are you doing?” he asked.
She pulled up her skirt and moved to straddle his waist. “I’m breaking my rules, because I think you’ve been a good boy way too long, and it’s time for you to enjoy being a bad boy.”
Roman hadn’t touched her, so she took his hands and placed them on her ass.
“Don’t worry, I’ll take the lead on this one.” She ran her hands up his shirt, sinking them into his hair, and she kissed him.
“Fuck me, Abi, do you have any idea what you’re doing to me?”
She felt the hard ridge of his cock against her pussy, so she had a good idea she was driving him crazy. “Just a little.” She kissed his neck. “Do you like it?”
