She rolled her eyes. It was always the same excuses. “You were more interested in chasing other women than you were cases, Brad. I’m not an idiot.”

He let out a growl. “Do you even know why you came home early that day?”

She didn’t want to hear this. His excuses were exhausting. “I wasn’t feeling well that day.”

“Roman set me up. Your boss planned this whole thing,” Brad said. “He made sure you would be home so you would catch me.”

Abigail looked at him, and then she burst out laughing. “Wow,” she said. “Seriously, you would rather blame my boss for setting you up. You’re telling me right now that my boss held your dick and actually put it into your secretary as well as all the other women you were fucking at the time. Is that what you’re trying to tell me?”

Brad had gone red in the face.

“I’ve heard enough of your crap, Brad. I don’t know what you were hoping for today, but I’m not buying it, and you need to leave.” She pointed her finger toward the elevator.

At the same time, Roman stepped off. She watched him, and the moment he saw Brad, she watched how he tensed up.

“I was told you had forced your way into this building,” Roman said. “Security is on the way up.”

“Forced his way in?” Abigail asked.

“Yes, the new girl on the front desk wouldn’t succumb to his flirting, and he hit her hard and got access to the elevator.”

Abigail turned toward Brad. “Are you insane?” she asked. “Assaulting a woman, just so you can come and lie to me—”

“It’s not a lie. He fucking manipulated everything. We’d still be together if it wasn’t for his shit!” Brad turned toward Roman, and she saw the look of pure hatred. She had never seen him act like this before. “Why don’t you just admit it?” Brad yelled.

“He’s right,” Roman said.

This surprised her, as she looked toward Roman. “What?”

“I was aware he was cheating on you, but I didn’t want to be the one to break the bad news. He was making you miserable. Refused to support you. I saw the way you came in every single day, and you looked exhausted. He didn’t see what I did—a smart, beautiful, amazing woman who deserved a man who loved her, and that’s how I feel, Abi. This is not just a fling for me. This is love. I’m in love with you, I have been since that moment on the elevator.”

“Are you seriously going to admit you messed up her whole life? That you lied to her?”

“He didn’t lie to me,” Abigail said, turning toward Brad. “I was never in love with you, Brad. Things moved way too fast, but I could never seem to tell you I didn’t want to be with you. I figured I was the one getting cold feet.”

“You’re happy?” Brad asked.

“Yeah, I am, and what Roman did doesn’t change anything. You still cheated on me, and we both know it’s not the first time you did. You don’t know how to keep it in your pants.”

The elevator doors pinged open, and seconds later, Security stepped onto the floor. There was also a police officer with them. Abigail stepped away from Brad and moved toward Roman.

The woman on the front desk wanted to press charges. Abigail just wanted Brad out of her life.

Roman took Abigail and Angel home. There was no way they were going to be able to work the rest of the afternoon. They didn’t speak as they took Angel for a quick walk before heading up to his penthouse apartment in his building.

Abigail hadn’t said much to him, and he was waiting for her to freak out, be upset, or angry. They walked into his apartment, and he kissed the scruff of Angel’s neck and placed her on the floor as she trotted off to go and play.

Abigail stood in the main hallway, and then she turned away. With a hand on her hip and the other in the air, she looked at him.

“You love me?” she asked.

Of all of the things she could have said, that was not what he expected.

“Yes, I’m in love with you, and I have been for a very long time.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“You were with Brad, and you didn’t look happy.” Roman frowned. “What are you pissed about?”

Abigail smiled and walked toward him. “I’m not pissed about anything. Why do you think I am?”

“With everything that happened.”

She put her hands on his chest and stroked her fingers across his heart. “My life with Brad was miserable. I knew he was cheating on me, but I just couldn’t figure out how to prove it, and he always had so many reasons. I was stuck. It did suck to see him cheating, but that was more my pride than anything else. I’m not angry about you giving me the chance to find out he was cheating. I’m not angry about anything. How could I be? You love me and I love you.”
